The DIGNISHIELD™ Stool Management System (SMS) design draws from clinical insight to mitigate damage to delicate tissue due to leakage, pressure and friction. The DIGNISHIELD™ SMS helps protect patients from exposure, tissue damage and odor. The system also includes educational components and tools to help meet quality system guidelines.

The DIGNISHIELD™ SMS consists of a catheter tube assembly, a 60cc syringe, a collection bag, a syringe of lubricating jelly,a biological odor eliminator and a tube clamp. The device has no components made of natural rubber latex.

Permalene™ catheter and collection bag material is designed to minimize permeation of gas and water vapor
Low-pressure retention cuff designed to retain the device in the rectum
Funnel-shaped cuff and tube opening to aid in diverting stool into the drainage tube

Contraindications: The device should not be used for more than 29 consecutive days, on patients with certain medical conditions including rectal or anal abnormalities, or on patients who have had lower large bowel or rectal surgery within the last year. Do not use on patients with indwelling rectal or anal device, delivery mechanisms, or enemas in place.

Warnings and Adverse Events: There is a potential risk of misconnections with connectors from other healthcare applications. As with the use of any rectal device, adverse events can occur including: leakage of stool, loss of anal sphincter muscle tone, pressure necrosis, infection, bowel obstruction, and perforation of the bowel. Changes to the patient including: rectal bleeding indicating possible pressure necrosis, abdominal distention, cuff migration, and rectal pain should be investigated.

Stool Management System, DIGNISHIELD™, Collection Bags

The Bard® DigniShield® Stool Management System (SMS) with odor barrier properties is intended for fecal management by diverting and collecting liquid or semi-liquid stool to minimize skin contact in bedridden patients and to provide access for the administration of medications. The Bard® DigniShield® SMS device consists of a catheter tube assembly, a collection bag (Figure 1), a 60 ml syringe, a syringe of lubricating jelly and a biological odor eliminator. The device has no components made of natural rubber latex. Does not contain natural latex.
